The college database was originally developed and maintained by the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University from the early '50s through the mid '70s when Orchard House took over. After the merger with Wintergreen Software, Inc., the combined company has continued the tradition of continuous updating and refining the database. Wintergreen Orchard House has made a continuous effort to ensure the accuracy and integrity of its data. In the early '90s, as state and federal regulations required the compilation of more and more data on colleges and universities, Wintergreen Orchard House co-developed the Common Data Set (CDS). The CDS is a set of standards and definitions of data items used in the survey instruments. The Common Data Set initiative is a collaborative effort between publishers and the educational community to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all who are involved in a student's transition into higher education as well as an effort to reduce the reporting burden on data providers. The CDS continues to be the foundational information source for higher education data. For further information regarding the Common Data Set initiative visit http://www.commondataset.org/
